Roman Quarry St. Margarethen

Illustration of an open-air performance venue surrounded by high sandstone walls in the Roman quarry. St. Margarethen im Burgenland

Stone has been quarried in this sandstone quarry since Roman times; material from here was used for buildings in Vienna, among others. The quarry lies in the Fertő/Neusiedlersee cultural landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. In summer it becomes an open-air stage: at Oper im Steinbruch the rock walls serve as the backdrop for large opera productions.

Please check the programme and tickets with the organiser.
