Kufstein Fortress

Illustration of Kufstein Fortress above the old town and River Inn. Kufstein

Kufstein Fortress sits on a rock above the old town and the river Inn. It is first documented in 1205 as "Castrum Caofstein". In 1504, during the War of the Succession of Landshut, Emperor Maximilian I besieged and captured the town and castle and then had the complex expanded into a fortress. The town of Kufstein has owned it since 1924.
